How to get up early in the morning to workout: 3 simple techniques

How do you get out of bed in the morning?

This is one of the most common questions that I hear from people when they are wanting to start getting up early to workout.

Before we really dive into some methods of how to do it, let’s first take a step back and understand that most people want to exercise, and develop good habits, but there are some very fundamental things that need to be taken care of.

Most people have their priorities all screwed up

Yep, this is the first fundamental that we have to learn: Prioritization.

In other words, whatever is the most important thing to you, that is what will get the most attention.

For example, if eating breakfast, getting my morning coffee, and sleeping in is the most important thing to me, then I am going to make sure that it happens, no matter what life throws at me.

It’s the same as working out. If it is not a priority, then it will never get done. In fact, If you don’t make it one of the first things that you do in the morning, then it will most likely never happen. You will start making these excuses:

  • I'll go after work

  • I'll hit the treadmill this weekend

  • I don't really have time to work out

These statements that we make seem harmless at the time, and on the surface level everyone will nod their heads in agreement with you when you tell them you just don’t have time.

However, the real cause is because it hasn’t become a priority for you. I know, because it used to be me. Pretty soon the excuses become more frequent and you slip further and further away from the person that you want to become.

Then the cycle repeats itself…

So, how do I make working out and getting up early a priority?

Simple answer: You just get up and do it.

Long answer: It takes practice.

You will find that you probably won’t ever have the motivation or energy to do it, so you will have to learn how to tell all the negative voices in your head to shut up.

There are some practical things that you can do though and they are:

  • Go to bed early

  • Go to bed at the same time every night

  • Don’t drink caffeine past noon

  • Get up when the alarm goes off

You can also try making This your alarm clock warning in the morning!

Whatever works.

Your health and wellness is not as important to you as it is anyone else.

You are your only hope, and if you don’t make it a priority in your life, no one else will either.

Other Benefits of Getting up Early and Working out

Just in case you still are not convinced that this is the correct path to take in your life, or if you are still saying things like:

  • I’m just not a morning person

  • I don’t function without coffee or sleep

  • I’m more energized at night

  • I don’t have a problem, I’m not overweight or anything

Then take a look here and see some of the biggest benefits, according to various studies (links to sources).

Sure, you have probably heard all of these things before, and deep down you know them to be true, but you still just won’t do it.

To you I say, if you don’t make the time to do it now, then you will have to make the time to do it later.

About 8 years ago, I started waking up at 5 am, and have since reduced it to 4:30 am, and there are multiple reasons for that.

The main reason I did it (New Dad’s listen up) is because, I had two little children in the house and it was the only thing in my life that I could control at the time.

I felt like I was just going through the motions everyday.

  • Wake up

  • Go to work

  • Sleep

It was a grind. I was also 30 pounds overweight and I hated the way I looked and felt, but didn’t know what to do. Finally, I realized that if I wanted to change my life, and become the man I wanted to be and was made to be, that I needed to start doing the work and making the changes.

That’s what I did, and instead of not having energy when I got off work, I found I had extra energy, and was excited and relieved to have time to myself in the morning. Not only was I getting stronger, but I felt alive and more like an active participant in my own life.

Most men live an unexamined life, and if this goes on unchecked for too long, it leads to a very unhappy and miserable existence. Not to mention you will be oblivious to the things in your life that are causing stress, unrealistic expectations and keeping you from success in the areas that you want.

Now, go do it!
