The 8 best online workout programs for men who want to build muscle, strength and endurance

Have you ever really wanted to know what the best workouts out there are for you?

I mean really, where do you start? How do you know what's good and what's bad?

I have asked those same questions many times. In fact I spent countless hours trying to find the perfect workout regimen. I have concluded that there is only one perfect workout.

The perfect workout is the one that you do consistently and increase intensity over time
— Stephen Dull

I used to do random workouts and think I was really doing something. Sure, my arms were getting bigger, but I had a flat chest, no definition and my abs were buried under a layer of fat that I couldn't seem to get rid of.

Then something happened. I started exercising consistently, 5 days a week. I focused on form over weight, putting my ego aside and just learning the movements correctly.

I began tracking everything I ate, monitoring how it made me if it made me feel full, hungry, or raunchy inside.

Most of the foods made me feel raunchy. What I found was that there were certain foods that made me actually want more of them. Several of those include:

  • Jimmy Johns
  • Chinese Food
  • McDonald's

Every time I ate at these places, I always wanted more. I was never satisfied, but they made me gain all of the unwanted weight.

On a side note, I used to work at McDonald's and had an eye opening experience with how many people are addicted to Diet Coke, Coke, and the Sweet Tea.

I actually had to make the sweet tea sometimes. Guess how I made it. I got a 5 gallon bucket, put about 2 gallons of sugar in, and the other 3 gallons were a mix of tea and water. That means that for every cup of tea a person gets, 40% of it is sugar.

Sugar is like crack. In fact studies have shown that sugar is actually more addictive than crack. Hence the order of 2 big mac meals - Supersized of course, and a Diet Coke.

It made me sad and angry all at the same time to see how people just flocked to eat and drink the garbage. I started doing a Navy SEAL workout at the time. I got in excellent shape, and stayed away from the Mcdonald's. The program that I was using was from a book by Mark DeLisle called "The Navy SEAL workout: The complete total body fitness program". When it comes to fitness, the SEAL's are experts.

That is probably the best beginner workout book on the market, in my opinion. If you stick to it, and do exactly what he lays out in the book, you will see results. Not eating McDonald's is part of the plan.

I got lost and out of shape again during my college years, and that's hen I really let myself go. For about 5 years I ate whatever I wanted. Lot's of Taco Bell, and Magic Wok. Seriously, I ate one or the other every day for 5 years. I gained 35 pounds. The only reason I didn't gain more is because I sometimes swam between classes and walked all over campus daily.

After 5 years, I decided it as time to get serious. My wife and I took a picture for Christmas and when I saw it I realized that I needed to do something about my health. We had a baby and one more on the way. I had to step up, and get these disciplines down before I went to critical mass.

That's when I found some of these online fitness programs. I have used all of them at some point, and have looked at many others. These are the ones that I deem as the most honest and trustworthy. They offer results and if you follow the program you will get them.

Seal Grinder PT 6 month training program

SEALGrinderPT was founded by Brad Mcleod in June 2010, and is "dedicated to working out and improving your mind and body by unleashing the warrior within you."

Brad Mcleod is a former Navy SEAL, and didn't just go through HELL week once, but twice. He is the real deal. He started SEALgrinderPT a while ago but it has grown it into a unique online business.

Not many people can do that. Not only that, but if you email him, he will answer you right away, its just him and he kills it.

He recently did an event out in Montana called Freak Frogman training camp. He teaches guys teamwork, land navigation, combat defense, hiking (rucking), basic pistol and rifle training and concludes with a final SEAL mission/raid.

He has another event coming in 2018. Stay Tuned.

Brad also has a lot of free workouts and is constantly giving stuff away on his website. Check out his book "The Top 10 Navy Seal Workouts" You get this free for subscribing to his website.

I wish I would have had this a long time ago. These guys have everything for the tactical athlete. The articles are all science based and their programs are all very affordable.

They have over 190+ goal specific training plans. You won't find that anywhere else. You can browse them here. Personally, I like the military programs. They vary from selection programs to on-boarding programs to improvement plans.

I discovered them when searching for a Navy AIRR training plan. What I found was the USCG Rescue Swimmer Training Plan.

It has a program description so You can see what you are getting

The other cool thing is that it tells you what equipment you will need.

They also give you a sample of the training, so you can see if it might be exactly what you are looking for.

This is probably the most comprehensive online workout program website that I have found. Once again, this isn't for everyone. However, there is a program for everyone. These will get you in the best shape of your life.

If you are someone that is looking to go into the military for Special Operations such as BUD's/MARSOC/Green Berets etc..., then this is the type of training you will want to do.

You will notice a trend with me. I like to recommend military workout programs. Mainly because I was in the military and I know first hand that multi-modal, high intensity workouts will get you into the best shape. All of that other stuff is good, but this will make you the best.

Price: $39.95 typical program
Yearly Membership: $299.00
Monthly Membership: $29.00

I love SEALFIT, in fact I love it so much that I own every single book that Mark Divine has written, and pretty much watched every video he has ever done.

These are workouts from some of the top online personal trainers, and is one of the best online workout programs.

I do not tell people about online fitness programs without mentioning SEALFIT. It is hands down my go to for improving my overall fitness levels. He does multi-modal, high-intensity, and cross-fit style workouts which are right up my ally.

Below are the pictures in order from left to right: Before SEALFIT, after the first time through SEALFIT, After the 2nd time through the 8 Week Program.

One of the coolest things that I learned during my times through SEALFIT and through all of Mark's books that I read was something called "Box Breathing."

Box Breathing is very simple, it is a free online workout. Here is how it works:

  • Find a comfortable place to sit (sit erect and with legs folded under body)
  • Close your eyes
  • Breathe deeply in through your nose for 5 seconds
  • Hold for 5 seconds
  • Breathe out through your nose for 5 seconds
  • hold for 5 seconds
  • Repeat for 5 minutes

Box breathing results in many benefits. Check out the video below.

I was able to visit SEALFIT HQ when I was out in San Diego for a work conference. Unfortunately they were closed when I went, I was stuck in traffic for an hour and a half, and just missed Mark. However, I did leave my book there and asked if he could sign it, and I would pay for shipping etc...

Basically, SEALFIT had helped awaken the real man inside of me, it gave me "fire in the gut."

Guess what? He signed my book and sent it back to me.

Mark is the Real Deal Holyfield. He has 20 years experience as a SEAL, and his Leadership is world class.

If you like SEALFIT, then you will want to read these books:

SuperFitDads

I came across this excellent program after reading a book called "How to get lean strong and bulletproof: be more awesome than you were in your 20's"

This is probably hands down the best online personal training program, and just for signing up to be on his email list you will get his awesome free book

Tim is another guy who answers the emails that he receives, another reason to love this workout program.

Tim was once an engineer in the automotive industry just like myself, I spoke to him through email a couple times and he was kind enough to return my emails.

He has a knack for taking the extremely erroneous complexity out of the fitness industry and make it extremely practical and palatable for the average Joe.

He is almost 50 years old and is in the best shape of his life. Most guys think their glory days are over in their 30's (This kind of defeatism makes me sick). Tim debunks that myth, and pretty much just puts guys in their place. If you want to get in shape and are over 35, then this is the program for you.Tim will give you a new zest and vigor for life.

Look at that beast doing a curl up with 135# attached to himself. Boom!

Nerd Fitness Academy

I found Steve's website about 5 years ago. I thought it was one of the coolest most creative fitness websites around. He was honest, and seemed to know all the struggles with fitness that everyone has.

He even has a free EBook called "15 mistakes every Newbie Makes", and you get it just for signing up along with lots of other cool gifts.

One of the things that he offers, (if you want to try this out before you make the leap), is a chance to create a free character. You see, Steve believes that life is really a video game, a real one. With you as the character. You have complete control over what quests you want to go on, and how you level up.

Check out his TEDx Talk below.

Who is it for?

Nerdfitness is for anyone really, but in order to really understand Steve you might need to be a child from the 80's and 90's who really likes video games and other nerdy things.

Steve has helped thousands of people take charge of fitness in their lives. He believes that there is an enemy to us all, and this the industry and world that tries to sell us lies about fitness, media, culture and anything of the sorts. For this, I love Steve.

He has grown his blog into a six-figure business. He wrote a blog post 5 days a week for 9 months before he said he got serious traction. Perseverance.

Since then he has created the Academy, he wrote a book, travels, and just like Pinky, tries to take over the world.

I have never personally spoken to Steve, but have been in contact with the other Rebels that help him run his business.

He also recently released a new program on his Website called: "RISING HEROES"

RISING HEROES is: The epic, real-time, multiplayer fitness and self-improvement adventure that makes getting healthy simple and fun.

Check it out. At the very least, subscribe to his blog to receive free content and weekly blog posts.

Price (NF Academy): One time payment of $149.00 or 3 payments of $59.00
Monthly Membership (RISING HEROES): $29.99/month

Athlean-X

Jeff Cavaliere is awesome.

The YouTube video content he puts out is worth watching alone.

Jeff's big thing is "If you want to look like an athlete, you have to train like an athlete." This is coming from a guy who trains athletes, and has trained hundreds if not thousands of people.  I don't know if any of you remember "Sting" the wrestler from back in his WCW days, when he used to rappel from the rafters. Guess who trained him? Yep, Jeff.

What do you get?

I like the comparison between Athlean X and P-90X because they are along the same lines of training. However there are huge contrasts between the to and Athlean X has the clear advantage in my opinion.

Athlean X Starter: One time payment of $77 Lifetime Access
Athlean X All-Star: One time payment of $97.00

THENX

Calisthenics.

I have only recently found these guys. They introduced me to some movements that I had been wanting to attempt but didn't really know where to start. Things such as a "Muscle up". I watched one of their tutorial videos and was immediately hooked. Most of their videos are on YouTube , so you should at the very least subscribe to their channel here.

They are a team of 4 guys, and are incredibly knowledgeable. They all have unique experience in the fitness industry.

The program that they offer is for all levels of fitness.

IMpossible Abs

Joel Runyon, the creator of IMPOSSIBLEHQ is one cool dude.

He actually recently completed something called the 777 Project in which he ran 7 ultra-marathons on 7 different continents to build 7 schools for an organization called Pencils of promise.

In the process, he got injured an was sued by a millionaire. You should see his IMPOSSIBLE LIST. These are things that he wants to accomplish and deems impossible. He, much like Steve Kamb started out small with just a blog, started getting connected and boom, all of a sudden he is changing lives.

I have talked to Joel a couple times through email, he is another guy that will get back to you. He has offered me advice on blogging and building my space.

His program IMPOSSIBLE ABS is just another thing that he can add to his repertoire. I know that it will deliver, because Joel Delivers. He promised to raise $200K for 7 schools and run 7 ultra-marathons. That's commitment.

What do you get?

There are two different options available. The training edition and the challenge edition. The main difference is that the challenge edition has more accountability and bonus features built into it.

If you are a self starter and think you can tackle anything that you put your mind to, then the training edition is probably the right choice for you. On the contrary, if you are like the other 95% of the population, and need reminding and encouragement, than the challenge edition is best for you

Impossible Abs: Training Edition: $47.00
Impossible Abs: Challenge Edition: $97.00

Where you go from here is up to you

That's it. I have given you all that you need to know to make an informed decision. The truth is, none of them are wrong, but it will ultimately be up to you and what it is you are looking for.

I personally like all of them, and have gleaned so much from the men who work hard to create them and grow them.

Lately I have been using a mix of everything that I have learned on my fitness journey. I use the NerdFitness idea of creating my character, Box Breathing From SEALFIT, Pull-up and Push-up workouts from SEALGrinderPT, the eating habits of SuperFit Dads, the advice from Athlean X, Joel's Impossible Abs workouts, the Calisthenics training of ThenX and the endless programs from MTI.

I have been training to run a marathon by only running two days a week for the past several months and also doing SEALFIT and Crossfit Style workouts. I also love to swim and have been doing that as well. I am trying to perfect the CSS (Combat Swimmer Sidestroke). I'm not as efficient as I would like to be, but I will keep you posted.

Fitness is a Journey, and it should be fun. I am constantly trying new things and pushing my limits. I believe that if you aren't doing that, then you are just wasting time.

- Stephen

P.S. If there is any program that you think I should add to the list let me know. Also if you have experience with any of these online programs I would love to hear about them.
