How to be a better man in a world that always wants a quick fix or some form of medication

How to be a better man in a world that always wants a quick fix or some form of medication

Most people want a quick fix.

They want a fabricated version of themselves.

Not only that, but they want, processed food, microwaveable snack dinners, Keurig coffee, on demand streaming movies, fast-lane checkouts, grocery pick-up in a car.

We like things how we want them, when we want them, and in the best quality possible. We are a highly consumerist culture, and we are driven by our "We want it now, mentality." It's really kind of sad.

We no longer know the term patience, or wait, we just don't have time in our lives for it.

Why every man needs a mission: How to get focused, recharged and back on the front-lines

Why every man needs a mission: How to get focused, recharged and back on the front-lines

I don't talk about this much, and have really only spoken of it once or twice.

When I got out of the military in 2005 it was very difficult for me to adapt back in to civilian life, and to this day I still struggle.

I couldn't find a job for months, and the skills that I had gained were of no value to most employers. They didn't care that I had served my country, or that I had made E-5 in 4 years. They didn't care about my good conduct medals, or that I had supervised a watch center or strike intelligence analysis cell.

My skills and knowledge were overlooked.

Maybe it was me.

How to think offense all the time, wake up early, and prioritize your goals and decisions

How to think offense all the time, wake up early, and prioritize your goals and decisions

I haven’t written in a while. No excuses.

The truth is, I didn’t really have much to write about, and I don’t want to waste anyone’s time talking about useless stuff.

Lately, though I have had a few things on my mind.

3 things actually:

  • How to think offense all the time

  • Waking up early

  • Learning how to prioritize your goals and decisions

The Comparison Trap: Why a Man Does it, and Who he Should Really be Comparing Himself too.

The Comparison Trap: Why a Man Does it, and Who he Should Really be Comparing Himself too.

What's the number one thing that most guys ask each-other when they first meet?

"So, what do you do?"

This question can make a man shake in his boots, especially if he is already uncomfortable with his masculinity and how he provides for his family.

He doesn't need to be though, unless of course he is a dirt-bag, who lives and leaches off of other people.

I actually despise this question, mainly because we have come to use it as a way to compare ourselves to other men, from the answer that we get we make assumptions and judgments about social status, money, success, and manhood.

GORUCK Tough Challenge: Learn how to train, how to pack, and what you can expect to experience during the event

GORUCK Tough Challenge: Learn how to train, how to pack, and what you can expect to experience during the event

In other words, you can't do it alone, there are no accolades, and you get to suffer.

Who wouldn't want to sign up?

The reality is that the GORUCK Challenge is one of the funnest and most fulfilling things that I have done. It reminded me a lot of those first few days at boot-camp. Everyone is disoriented the Cadre are shouting out commands, some guys have the deer in the headlights look, it's chaos.

When they don't  get the response they desire, then they punish the whole team. The whole event is designed to do one thing. Take a huge group of people from all walks of life and have them go from not knowing each other, to functioning as one unit.

It doesn't happen automatically, it takes a couple hours before everyone starts to see the big picture, and the cadre do a great job of channeling everyone in that direction.

Fix Your Character Before You Fix Your Hair: What Every Man Needs To Get Right

Fix Your Character Before You Fix Your Hair: What Every Man Needs To Get Right

You see it all the time. Dudes looking in mirrors and worrying about their hairstyles, or what shoes they are going to wear.

Who cares about all of that stuff, especially if you don't have character, grit, or resilience?

The stuff that really makes a man.

Our culture has it backwards. These articles that I see online of "the 10 best men's hairstyles" and "the best shoes for your first date".....Who gives a rats ass?

What's the foundation and infrastructure of your life like?

Short Term Thinking vs Long term Goals: The effects of Instant Gratification and how it harms us as men

Short Term Thinking vs Long term Goals: The effects of Instant Gratification and how it harms us as men

The point I want to hit on though is that we live in an extremely consumerist and entitled culture. We want things right now, and we want them the way we want them, no exceptions.

We believe that everything should be handed to us, in our laps, with a pretty red ribbon tied around it, and with all our wishes coming true.

15 Books that Every Man “Should” Read in his Lifetime: About Men, For Men, and Written by Men

15 Books that Every Man “Should” Read in his Lifetime: About Men, For Men, and Written by Men

There are a lot of bloggers, people, and websites that tell you that you "should" read certain books if you are a man, and they focus on things like how to dress, or how to behave.

Most of them tell you that you should read “The Great Gatsby”, or “The Catcher in the Rye.”

Those books are decent, but boring, at least in my opinion. I believe that a man needs to read books that he’s actually interested in. He shouldn’t read a book because he thinks he has to, or because everyone else is.
